SUMMARY:ONLINE SERIES: A Year to Live
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE SERIES: A Year to Live \nwith Tania Triana and Ream \n6 Thursdays \nFeb 27th\, April 24th\, June 26th\, August 28th\, October 23rd\, December 11th \nTime: 5-7 PM PT (Time Zone Converter) \nOPEN TO ALL\nClosed Captioning Provided on Zoom \n  \n\n\nWhat if 2025 was the last year of your life? In Buddhism\, we practice to meet conditions as they arise and to bring our practice to each moment\, without preference for the outcome and with the maximum compassion. This yearlong course will build your capacity to live each day of your life with intention\, supported by practice\, even as the conditions around us intensify\, such as climate crisis\, political repression and war. \n  \nWe will come together to meet the world as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, and to strengthen our practice of mindfulness\, wise understanding\, wise action\, equanimity\, and joy. In community\, we will prepare for a good death\, which is inevitable– one that is supported by heart practices\, such as forgiveness and loving kindness\, and the Buddha’s ethical teachings on life and loss. With one another\, we can face what comes. \n  \nThis course features six months of live group work with the teachers\, and six months of small group peer work over the course of the year. Your registration covers ALL SIX live meetings. \n  \nThe five remembrances of the Buddha\, first found in the Upajjhatthana Sutta (“Subjects for Contemplation”)\, are intended to be recited every day: \n\nI am of the nature to grow old. There is no way to escape growing old.\nI am of the nature to have ill health. There is no way to escape having ill health.\nI am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death.\nAll that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them.\nMy actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions. My actions are the ground upon which I stand.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nCost \nThe teachings are regarded as priceless. So they are offered without a fee. You are invited to support the teachings and our efforts by contributing voluntary donations (the practice of “Dana”) for the expenses of the meditation center and the support of the teachers. \nThe ticket prices are listed as different tiers with suggested donations based on income ranges. Please scroll through the entire menu to see all the options. For those who wish to give more\, you may choose an “add-on” to your ticket. For those unable to give\, there is an option for that. \nOther ways to give: \nTo make a gift to sustain the work of East Bay Meditation Center\, you may do so via Paypal: paypal.me/eastbaymeditation or our website: eastbaymeditation.org/dana 100% of our programming is sliding scale and no one will ever be turned away for lack of funds. \n  \nGiving to our teachers: \nPlease also consider giving a financial gift to our teachers as well\, who do not receive a salary for their work\, and give their teachings freely to all. In this way\, we practice sacred reciprocity between teachers and students. \nVENMO: @ranger18ream \nPAYPAL: Adelante@riseup.net \n(Please reference “Year to Live” and the teachers will share the gifts with each other) \nThank you for the gifts of your generosity and for supporting the work of East Bay Meditation Center and our beloved teachers who have volunteered their time. \n  \nFor Zoom participation\, these are our Universal Access Guidelines: \n– Please do not use virtual or blurred backgrounds \n– Please keep your camera still when it’s turned on \n– Please say your name when you speak \n– Facilitators will attempt to read any comments in the chat out loud \n– Please mute when you’re not speaking. \n\n\n\n\n\nTeaching Team\n\n\n \nTania Triana (they / she / elle / ella) is a queer Black Latina spiritual warrior and proud bilingual daughter of Latin American immigrants. Tania is grateful to have found a spiritual home and social justice community at EBMC and in the virtual sangha of Buddhists for Justice in Palestine. They served on EBMC’s Leadership Sangha (board of directors) from 2019 to 2024\, and graduated from the EBMC’s inaugural Spiritual Teacher and Leadership Program in 2023. When she’s not teaching her brilliant high school students or leading meditations at EBMC or BJ Pal\, Tania can typically be found with her head buried deep in a book\, or out and about enjoying walks in nature\, hamming it up at karaoke\, or plotting our collective liberation. \n \nReam (they/them) is a queer organizer of European ancestry on unceded Ohlone Land\, working for over 25 years in the labor movement\, currently as the Strategic Campaigns Director for the United Domestic Workers’ Union. Ream is a Community Teacher at the EBMC and is a co-founder of EBMC’s Social Justice Sangha\, and Racial Justice Skills for White Practitioners Deep Refuge Group.  Ream is a teacher and practitioner with Generative Somatics.

We hope this effort will build some momentum and energy for EBMC and bring more people in our community together in-person. \n  \nThese new community building hours are the same evenings as our Alphabet (Tuesdays 7pm)\, BIPOC (Thursdays 7pm) and Maha Sanghas (Fridays 7pm) so we hope this effort will also encourage people to join those groups with a hope to generate enough attendance to bring them back to in-person every week! This was also based on feedback from the survey. See more info about our Practice Groups here.  \n  \nThere are so many reasons to be in community right now and EBMC wants to support this by opening our space during these times to anyone who needs it. We are stronger when we are in solidarity together to meet the moment we are in. We hope to see you soon! Come practice. Come snack. Come as you are. Feel free to bring a friend! \n  \nPlease note: During these specific hours\, masks will be encouraged\, but not required. Again\, this is a pilot effort that we are trying in this one area based on survey responses\, with a goal of expanding our circle\, but as of now\, our masking policy remains the same for all other programming and events.

Dr. Chao co-directs two NIH-funded training fellowships on integrative health research\, with the goal of building pipelines to improve diversity in the scientific workforce. \n \n\n\n\n\nMushim Patricia Ikeda is an internationally-known secular mindfulness and Buddhist teacher working primarily with justice activists and Black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) meditation practitioners and with people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. A core teacher at East Bay Meditation Center in Oakland\, California\, she is an author whose writing has been published in Lion’s Roar\, Tricycle\, Buddhadharma and various anthologies. She is the recipient of an honorary doctor of sacred theology degree from the Starr King School for the Ministry. Mushim was selected by Lion’s Roar Buddhist media magazine as one of twenty-six “Great Buddhist Teachers” in the January 2022 issue. See her eco-related writings\, “The Pine Tree Koan\,” at https://www.buddhistinquiry.org/article/the-pine-tree-koan/ and “I Take Refuge in the Buddha\,” in Lion’s Roar Buddhist media\, https://www.lionsroar.com/taking-refuge-in-the-three-jewels/. Mushim’s website is \nwww.mushimikeda.com \n \nH. Margarita Loinaz\, MD\, is a retired public health physician and Buddhist teacher trained in the Theravada and Tibetan traditions. While in public health\, she worked at Tom Waddell Clinic and Homeless programs in San Francisco. On the clinical faculty at UCSF she mentored students and residents on the care of underserved communities. With one of her students\, she published two seminal articles on the plight of day laborers who often work in unprotected dangerous jobs where injuries are devastating. Later\, through training in Biodynamic Osteopathy\, she learned to recognize the self-correcting drive within the body and its potential for profound healing. \nDr. Loinaz has been a Buddhist practitioner since 1977 and trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1994 becoming one of the early teachers of MBSR in the SF Bay Area. She developed mindfulness programs for the Spanish-speaking community and homeless patients of the clinic\, including an ongoing support group. In an effort to make convert Buddhist meditation centers more inclusive\, she and Marlene Jones co-organized the first People of Color retreat at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in 1999. Over the past 20 years she has gradually focused her studies and teaching on the Dzogchen lineage of the Tibetan tradition. These teachings are based on the recognition of our essential nature as human beings which provides a powerful refuge and perspective\, particularly while living under cultures of domination. She sees parallels between the self-correcting drive within our bodies with the drive in the mind to understand and free itself.. \nSee Dr. Loinaz’s article “Recognizing Our True Nature” in Lion’s Roar magazine here: https://www.lionsroar.com/meditations-on-buddhanature/
