SUMMARY:IN PERSON: Toward a Just Yoga (Book Event)
DESCRIPTION:Toward a Just Yoga \nAnjali Sawhney in conversation with authors Anjali Rao and Thenmozhi Soundararajan \nFeaturing opening music from vocalist Deepti Warrier  \nSunday\, December 7th 2025 \n5:30-7:00pm PT \nIn-person at EBMC: 2406 Webster St.\, Oakland CA \n  \nMore than ever we need yoga spaces that offer solace\, community\, and healing\, that can cultivate capacity to hold complexity and disrupt ongoing and past oppressions. \nAs we look toward building these spaces\, we might consider the following questions: \nWhat does yoga have to do with caste\, gender\, and power? \nWhy is a feminist and a critical lens on yoga history relevant during these times? \nHow can we re-envision yoga spaces that are truly welcoming and liberatory for all? \nJoin Anjali Rao and Thenmozhi Soundararajan\, co-founder of Equality Labs\, for a generative discussion that explores these core questions from Anjali’s thought-provoking book\, Yoga As Embodied Resistance. This discussion sheds light on ways in which we can build authentic and embodied solidarities across differences. \nWe begin with a musical performance and a brief centering practice before diving in. The discussion will be followed by audience Q&A and a book signing\, and samosas and chai will be served before and after the event. Copies of Yoga as Embodied Resistance will also be available for purchase during the event\, courtesy of Womb House Books \nDo join us on December 7th: 5:30-7:00 pm! \n  \nPlease note the address for EBMC’s new space: \n2406 Webster St.\, Oakland\, CA \nDoors open 5:00pm\, event begins at 5:30pm \n  \nThis event will be in-person. Space is limited to the first 200 people who register. Registration does not require a donation\, but the offering of a financial contribution is deeply appreciated. People of all ages and abilities are absolutely welcomed. \nDonations are welcomed even if you’re unable to attend. \n  \nFor a list of our offerings and more information please visit our website at www.eastbaymeditation.org. \n  \nPresented in partnership with North Atlantic Books and Womb House Books. \n  \n \n  \nBIOGRAPHIES \n \nAnjali Rao brings an intersectional and decolonial feminist lens to the study of philosophy and yoga history integrating storytelling\, art and poetry. Emphasizing an embodied approach\, her work deconstructs the dynamics of caste\, gender\, nationalism and colonialism. She is on the faculty of multiple yoga teacher training programs. SUMMARY:ONLINE: Living My Practice Wholeheartedly: Whiteness\, Race and the Bodhisattva Vow
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Everyday Zen and the East Bay Meditation Center\, co-sponsored by Branching Streams\, Dharma Heart Zen\, San Francisco Zen Center and Stone Creek Zen. \nAn Online Class for White Practitioners with Crystal Johnson\, Sarah Emerson\, Chris Fortin & Tova Green \nWhile this year of pandemic has been disruptive and challenging in many ways\, it has also created an opening\, a space for greater awareness and urgency around issues of racial harm.  The murders of Breonna Taylor\, George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery; the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 and the climate crisis\, especially on the Black\, Latinx and Native communities; and now the armed assault on the U.S. Capitol\, are all shocking outcomes of the system of race-based oppression in America. \nAs white people\, especially those of us with class privilege\, this can be both upsetting and overwhelming.  Our compassionate nature registers the suffering\, yet our confusion makes it difficult to know what to do.  In this workshop\, we offer brief talks\, group discussion\, reflection and time for Q&A to explore these states of distress\, and examine how to move from the overwhelm\, confusion\, guilt\, uncertainty and isolation to the joyful practice of compassion\, fueled by the energy of the Bodhisattva vow. \n \nThis program is a benefit for the East Bay Meditation Center in Oakland\, CA. \nIn registering for this daylong workshop\, we are inviting you to support the work of the East Bay Meditation Center (EBMC) in Oakland\, CA. Founded and led by a majority of POC teachers and practitioners\, EBMC opened its doors in 2007 to provide a dharma refuge for people of color\, members of the LGBTQI community\, people with disabilities\, and other underrepresented communities. \nThrough conscious cultivation of practices of Radical Inclusivity\, Shared Leadership and Gift Economics\, EBMC seeks to foster liberation\, personal and interpersonal healing\, social action\, and inclusive community building.  \nThrough our writings and workshops such as this one for white people\, we offer support to other dharma communities and practitioners who are seeking to more fully live their practice in the world.  \nPlease give as generously as you can to support this important work. \n

DESCRIPTION:Rooted and Resilient: An Online Retreat with Spring Washam to Support the East Bay Meditation Center\nFriday\, May 15 5PM – 7PM PST | Saturday\, May 16 10AM – 5PM PST \nHow do we remain hopeful in the midst of so much fear and despair? With the shifts that are coming our way each day\, what new world can we imagine\, what future can be born out of our current circumstances? How can we deepen the roots of resilience in ourselves and our communities to meet these times? \nJoin beloved meditation teacher\, author and visionary leader Spring Washam online as we explore how to meet the challenges of this current moment with an open heart\, and find wisdom\, strength and courage to face the unknown. \nIn this special weekend retreat we will learn how to apply the teachings of compassion to the moment-to-moment reality of the “new normal” of our everyday lives\, while developing a fierceness that will help us move into the future that is unfolding in ways we could never have imagined only a couple of months ago. \nWhether right now you need to focus on cultivating supportive practices for yourself\, or develop skills to engage more broadly with what is unfolding in our world\, the dharma teachings and mindfulness practices we will explore together can support you as we respond to this unprecedented time. \nThe program begins Friday\, May 15 with a short program in the evening and includes a full day of offerings on Saturday\, May 16\, including dharma teachings on love\, hope and resilience; periods of meditation and mindful movement; and small group discussions. \nThis retreat is open to all and is well-suited for people who are new to meditation practice as well as experienced practitioners. \nYoga and Movement offered by Elika Aird of Blissful Bodies and Master John Ellis of Five Realms Meditative Movement.  \nThis offering is a fundraiser for the East Bay Meditation Center and we ask that you give as generously as you are able to support our programs\, for the benefit of all. \nZoom links will be sent out to all registered guests 24 hours before the event. SUMMARY:Liberation Dharma in the Time of the Great Unraveling
DESCRIPTION:EBMC Benefit with Joanna Macy & Ty Blair\nWhen we face together what’s happening to our world–from climate chaos to permanent war–we can open to the liberation to be found in the Buddha Dharma.  Even as familiar systems unravel around us\, we find the vitalizing power of Sangha.  Grounded in the fact of our mutual belonging\, the Sangha helps deconstruct the separate self while incubating patterns of generosity and justice to transform the broader culture. \nPlease join us for a rare appearance by Joanna Macy in her 88th year to discuss the liberatory potential of the Dharma. Ty Blair will join Joanna as a speaker for the evening\, and our program will include poetry from Ann Marie Davis\, movement with Amana Johnson\, an interactive process from the Work That Reconnects\, and chanting to close. \nThe event will be ASL interpreted and wheelchair accessible. \nEBMC operates using a gift economics model\, which means that all of our regular programs are offered at no set fee and participants are asked to give to the extent that they are able for the good of the community. In order to support this unique approach\, which means that no one is ever turned away for lack of financial means\, we ask that you purchase your ticket at the highest end of the scale that you can afford. \nFundraising events such as this are the only time we charge an entrance fee. We offer “Generosity Tickets” for those who are not able to purchase a ticket. If you would like to buy a ticket to support someone else to attend\, please click on “Generosity Ticket” and choose an amount to donate. We will share it with someone who would like to attend. \nWe thank you for your generosity! \nIf you have questions please contact Cassandra@eastbaymeditation.org.
