SUMMARY:Potions for the Poisons: Heart Medicine for Our Times
DESCRIPTION:with Melvin Escobar \nIn the Buddhist teachings\, the Three Poisons (greed\, hatred\, and delusion) are the primary causes of suffering. Arguably\, these three poisons are more widespread than ever in our world. In this 3-week class series\, we will explore these unwholesome roots of our unease and the potions\, or antidotes\, to these poisons. Through stationary and gentle moving meditation\, interactive exercise\, talks\, and recommendations for home practice\, we will use contemporary psychological frameworks\, informed by an understanding of structural oppression\, to transform the poisons and live a life of true happiness. \nSpace is limited and registration is requested. \n \nCost: There is no registration fee for attending this event\, nor most EBMC events. However\, EBMC is not independently funded. The Center and the teachers will be sustained only by your voluntary donations (the practice of generous giving\, or “dana”). Please donate generously\, in proportion to your ability: \n* Either online (you will be offered an opportunity during the online registration process to donate to EBMC; the teachers will not receive any part of this online donation).\n* Or at the event\, in the two baskets at EBMC\, one for the Center\, the second for the Teacher. \nThank you for your generosity. EBMC will be only be sustained through our collective generosity. \nFragrance-free: In order to protect the health of community members with environmental illness\, please do not wear fragranced products (including “natural” fragrances) or clothes laundered in fragranced products to EBMC. \nEBMC is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Power\, Presence and Healing: Black Women Honoring Our Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:A Retreat for Self-Identified Black Women of the African Diaspora\nwith Amana Brembry Johnson and Arisika Razak \nI think our notions of what counts as radical have changed. Self-care . . . healing . . . attention to the body and the spiritual dimension – all of this is . . . a part of radical social justice struggles. \nAngela Davis \nBlack Women have frequently resisted oppressive social norms by coming together to cultivate healing\, empowerment\, and mutual support. Join our daylong retreat of mindfulness practices\, storytelling\, ritual movement and wisdom teachings from Buddhist and other spiritual traditions as we affirm our bodies\, share our stories\, and claim our birthright as sacred beings who are loved and cherished. Participants are invited to bring an item to place on the community altar that will be built during the day. \nSpace is limited and registration is requested. \n \nCost: There is no registration fee for attending this event\, nor most EBMC events. However\, EBMC is not independently funded. The Center and the teachers will be sustained only by your voluntary donations (the practice of generous giving\, or “dana”). SUMMARY:This is Your Brain on Meditation 2
DESCRIPTION:Honoring diverse meditators through community engagement and individualized neuroscience: Results from the first UCSF-EBMC neuroscience study \nwith Dr. Helen Weng and Mushim Ikeda \nParticipants in the neuroscience of meditation have historically belonged to dominant cultures. Over the past 3 years\, Dr. Helen Weng has collaborated with EBMC to increase the diversity of meditators represented\, including people of color\, LGBTQI community\, people with disabilities\, and the fat community. \nDr. Weng will present the results of this exciting study – how her team adapted neuroscientific procedures to be more culturally-sensitive and inclusive\, and how individualized approaches to analyzing brain data can “read your mind” during meditation. Participants may share their experiences\, and we will continue to adapt research methods to honor diverse meditators. \nLight dinner is provided. SUMMARY:The Power of Nonconceptual Timeless Awareness in Understanding our Conditioning
DESCRIPTION:with Margarita Loinaz \nAt the core of our being is a nonconceptual timeless awareness that recognizes itself. The wisdom that arises from this ground of being provides an unparalleled perspective to understand how we are conditioned. Our perception and sense of possibilities is heavily determined by the cultural narratives we live under. Where we are within the cultural context adds yet another layer that can further limit our possibilities for freedom. In this daylong\, we will use meditations that reconnect us to that non conceptual ground\, dharma talks and interactive exercises. The understanding gained brings greater compassion and the capacity to meet the challenges we face. \nPlease bring your lunch so that there is more continuity of awareness throughout the day. \nSpace is limited and registration is requested. \n \nCost: There is no registration fee for attending this event\, nor most EBMC events. SUMMARY:Cultivating Home in Our Hearts
DESCRIPTION:A day of Mindfulness and Inquiry for Adult Adoptees\, Fostered and/or Child Welfare System Survivors Exclusively \nwith Dr. Sean Feit Oakes and Fresh “Lev” White \nThis class is for us who experienced separation from birth families at early ages to explore the heart of the Buddha’s teachings: that pain and loss are built into life and are the seeds of wisdom and liberation. We’ll explore our experiences of family rupture; discuss tools for cultivating self-love\, compassion\, and the possibility of home in ourselves as a deep refuge. \nAll adult (18+) adoptees\, formerly foster home or system youth\, and any adult who were forced/separated from their birth family at young ages are welcome. Providers or family members will be given a separate opportunity to participate. \nSpace is limited and registration is encouraged. \n

SUMMARY:Let Your Heart Lead You: To Community\, Healing\, and Joy through Loving Kindness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Let Your Heart Lead You: To Community\, Healing\, and Joy through Loving Kindness Meditation\nwith Mushim Ikeda and Deb Kerr \nThe practice of lovingkindness has the power to transform our lives. Taught by the Buddha as an antidote to fear and ill-will\, lovingkindness meditation reconnects us to our heart’s natural ability to be open and loving\, both to ourselves and to others. As we do so\, it becomes possible to move beyond “us” and “them” in building resilient communities; we may find deep healing\, both internally and in relationships; and a foundation for joy is established. This daylong will include periods of trauma- and access-informed stationary and moving meditation\, interactive exercises and instruction in establishing and expanding lovingkindness practice. \nSpace is limited and registration is requested. \n \n  \nCost: There is no registration fee for attending this event\, nor most EBMC events. However\, EBMC is not independently funded. The Center and the teachers will be sustained only by your voluntary donations (the practice of generous giving\, or “dana”). SUMMARY:Gratitude for All the Things – Joys and Sorrows on the Path of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:with Melvin Escboar \nBuddhist practice teaches us to cultivate gratitude for the 10\,000 joys and sorrows of our lives. As we deepen our practice we begin to appreciate both the bountiful blessings in life and the improbable gifts that arise from suffering. Is it possible to transform the resentments we carry as a result of our traumas and challenges\, including even those created within our families of origin? Strengthening the four qualities of gratitude (conviction\, virtue\, generosity\, and discernment) is essential to answering this question. This daylong will include a dharma talk\, stationary and gentle moving meditation\, guided visualization\, and interactive exercises. \nSpace is limited and registration is requested.  \n \nCost: There is no registration fee for attending this event\, nor most EBMC events. SUMMARY:Love: Supported by the Four Divine States
DESCRIPTION:Open to All expressions of love: friends\, partners\, siblings\, parent/child\, roommates\, etc. \nwith Rev. Liên Shutt  \nCo-Sponsored by Access To Zen \n  \nWe all want love.  \nAnd\, having and holding love and loving feelings can be challenging. Join us in exploring how love can be when expressed in conjunction with the qualities of the Four Divine States of Equanimity\, Kindness\, Compassion\, and Inclusive Joy. \nWhile grounded in these teachings and meditation practices\, the course will also be framed by readings from bell hook’s All About Love: New Visions; offering a blend of fierce feminist social criticism to ask us to transform our challenges into strength\, manifesting the love and caring we want in our lives here and now. \n  \nSpace is limited and registration is requested.
